Initial idea 3

Power Hungry Animals by The Apache Relay

 Music Video

The music video would reveal the stories behind the members of the band before they pursued this music career. Throughout the song the visuals would intercut between the four stories each displaying a sense that they don't belong in this situation they were meant to be in the band reflecting the line "Souls can not be fooled" . Here are the stories:

A 20 year old guy working in a kitchen. It is a low paid job where his boss shouts at him and he is treated very poorly, Throughout the song he realises that music is his passion and doesn't need to be treated the way he is. He finally builds up the courage to quit his job in order to join the band

A 20 year old girl with an aggressive boyfriend. She aims to pursue music however he puts her down and forbids her from following her dreams. With the help of the other band members she escapes the situation and joins the band and pursues her music career.

A 19 year old guy at university doing a degree in a subject he cares very little for because his parents have encouraged him to do so. close up shots of him in lessons,

A 21 year old girl associating with the wrong crowd. Lots of shots of her friends hanging around bad areas close ups of her false smiles and laughs. she arrives home and plays her guitar revealing where her true passions lie.

Towards the end of the song the video would become more down to earth featuring backstage 'real life' footage of the band. In a very organic style as if being filmed by the band members themselves this would convey that the band members like to have a good time, are fun people, and much happier in their current situation. In the end they all followed their passions and desires. The uplifting ending of the song would quickly cut between where the band members were and where they are now conveying the moral that you should pursue your dreams.

This however would not be filmed in a stereotypical cheesy music video style where the artists look straight into the camera, I intend for it to be quite a cinematic, showing a narrative behind the artists bringing their fans closer to them.

 Artist and Campaign

The people starring in the video would not be the band members. This displays that this group are less about image and more about the music and the message they portray. The Artists would be four guys and a girl, with quite different and quirky fashion styles and personalities. They would produce quite a raw country, folk sound through their music targeted at the country, acoustic, rock, folk and soul genre demographics. The band would oppose against traditional pop culture where image is everything and musical talent does not matter. They would not represent the image of their band instead they would have a symbol which would be featured on their album and website with quite an organic colour pallette of browns greens and oranges.

In terms of existing artists they would share similarities with the group Barr Brothers. The group would look very similar to this in terms of appearance - lots of denim, long careless hair etc. However, the campaign would feature almost no pictures of the actual group, instead it would be filled with patterns, shapes and retro, folk-like images that reflect the bands sound (light leaks, warm, earthy, organic colours, sunsets) here are some examples of images that could be featured on their website:

At this initial stage, my idea for the bands name would be The nomad party. I decided to create a test album cover to inspire further ideas, and portray how I envision the bands image. The Digipack cover features bold red typography with a slight eroding effect, this establishes the bands image as rough, down to earth and not perfect. The abstract pattern in the background would support a recurring theme throughout their campaign. I also added a light leak to introduce some more traditional, and recognised conventions for this genre of music.

Initial Idea 2

Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis

 Music Video

The song was written about the lead singers wife, however it is well known as a 'good time', drunken anthem. This atmosphere is what my music video intends to create. The video would be based around a group of rich college boys, dressed in smart outfits, who sneak out during the night to a driving range.
Infused with alcohol they party through the night, drinking, dancing, driving golf buggies and swinging golf clubs. To create an interesting effect whilst reflecting the careless attitudes of the band members, instead of hitting golf balls they would hit fruit and any other object they can find to create mess in a careless fashion, this would be filmed with a lot of slow motion. The effect of fruit flying everywhere in slow motion is quite visually impressive as shown in this clip.

The Boys would party the night away being as destructive as possible with lots of alcohol in a similar style to the 'bullingdon club' rituals or this clip from 'The riot club'. They would be rich, very boisterous and have no concern for money or damage of property. They would have a good time creating a party like atmosphere, and replicate the feel good tone of the song.

The boys starring in the video would be the band members, plus a few friends so intercut with this we would see them performing the song, at the same location with a drum kit, guitars and a lead singer performing at the golf club with flood lighting illuminating the band.

 Campaign

The artists would be represented as your average modern boy band, similar to mcfly however with more of an edge like the 1975. They would be exhibited as a group of boys who make good music and like to have fun. Their campaign would be heavily based around their image. They would be 4 good looking boys all with a passion for music and an individual sound that embodies the mood of a good time and having fun whilst your young. They would target teenagers mostly, girls would like them because they are attractive and cool, and boys would like them for their rebellious attitudes and party lifestyle. Their digipack would feature an image of themselves with a scribble style font that embodies their reckless attitudes. Here are some similar to my ideas

The mcfly image represents the boys as a fun group of friends whereas the 1975 with stern expressions look a bit more careless and cool, I imagine my boyband to be almost a combination of both, cool yet with a fun side this will make them more appealing to teenage and adult demographics.

This album cover from the kooks album 'Inside The Inside Out' features a picture that appears not to be set up, simply just the boys in a rehearsal room playing some music. This represents this band as one that simply cares about the music and not the image. This is an image that I would also like to incorporate into my band. Giving them impression that they are fun, cool and care about their music.

This website layout by 'The Wanted' is similar to how I envision the website for my boyband, filled with images of the boyband. Lots of advertisements of new singles, and current albums. The individual images of each member, with info on their personality is a good idea as it will allow the fans to feel like they know the band very well, making them more down to earth.

I would perhaps like to make my website a little more carefree than this, featuring more pictures of the band backstage, and rehearsal making them more organic and less commercial. However i like the layout and the use of advertising.

Initial Idea 1

Youth by Daughter

 Music Video

The video would centre around a 17 year old boy representing an image of corrupted youth. The majority of the video would feature this boy dancing through a bleak and desolate forrest. Through contemporary, gritty and abstract movement he would reflect emotions of fear, adrenaline and sorrow, as an escape from reality. As depicted by the song his dancing would represent his loss of innocence. Due to the success of this video by Sia I feel that this could be a very gripping and enticing music video.

However unlike this video, my idea incorporates a studio shoot of the artist; a 19 year old girl with an individual and very organic style, accompanied by 1 drummer with 2 large 'bassy' tom tom drums. By doing this the artists image is incorporated into the music video, furthermore it adds another element of interest to sustain the viewers attention. The studio in which they perform would be very dark and mysterious using a chiaroscuro lighting style, Similar to this however not in black and white.

As a lighting effect, bright spotlights would flicker in from above when the main beats of the song occur, this will light up the artists fully for a few split seconds, other than this they would be moderately hidden, with smoke and low key lighting. On these main beats, the drummer will also beat down on his drums which would have water on; when he hits the drums water will fly in the air and be illuminated by a coloured light from beneath.

The person staring as the dancer in the video would be my friend Josh. He is a professional contemporary dancer with training in both acting and dance. He has adopted his own individual style of contemporary dance which expresses more emotion through the movement than traditional styles. Here is a video of a recent class he taught in London, which I filmed:

Here is a solo video of him freestyling, showing some more impressive tricks throughout the dance that would be incorporated into the music video:

 Campaign

The live performance aspect of the video would feature the 2 artists behind the song. A female lead singer and a male drummer. It's rather a weird combination for a band however I think thats what will make them stand out. The group would have a very dark themed album, with their image playing a front role on their cover and website. The artists would have very contrasting appearances - both good looking in different ways. They would aim to be an artist like Ben Howard, aiming their music to a similar audience and in the same genre of music. Together the sound they create would be quite relaxed and light with heavy beats to add a sense of excitement and power to the music.

In terms of similarities with existing artists, there are few as it is very rare for a group to have just one instrumentalist. however there are many boy/girl bands with a similar image.
This group called the civil wars, shares similarities with my vision of the duos appearance. I picture my group to look like a much younger version of these artists. With the male drummer having long hair dressed quite smart apearing quite rugged, and the female to look more gentle and pretty.

I imagine the website to be very similar to this one by the London Grammar. It uses a dark colour code with a focal image of the band using an old fashioned blurring effect, which in todays music world appears quite different and cool.
